Training activity

PhD students will be able to demonstrate a systematic understanding of a field of study and mastery of the skills and methods of research associated with that field, as well as critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas. They are expected to be able to contribute to extend the frontier of knowledge; they will show skills in communicating with their peers, with the larger scholarly community and with society in general about their areas of expertise.
Working under the supervision of their academic advisers, Ph.D. candidates learn these skills by developing an original research project and by actively participating in classes, seminars, Winter and Summer schools organized by each Ph.D. Program. The purpose of these activities is to offer the necessary and relevant tools for each field of study.
Students must obtain 180 ECTS divided into:

  • 120 ECTS Research activities
  • 45 ECTS Disciplinary and interdisciplinary workshops and courses

15 ECTS Training activities complementary to research

Research activity

Research is the main activity for PhD students. A supervisor is appointed by the Doctoral Board for each Ph.D. candidate at the beginning of his/her Program. Each supervisor is appointed according to the Ph.D. candidate’s research project and provides advice and guidance also for the writing and submission of her/his final dissertation.
Courses and seminars are organized by the Doctoral School to provide all Ph.D. candidates disciplinary and interdisciplinary research skills. The calendar is updated on a yearly basis in November.
Ph.D. candidates are also expected to complete individual training activities, outside Turin University in Italy and abroad. These training activities are to be approved by the supervisor.

Complementary training

Courses and seminars are organized by the PhD program and by the Doctoral School to provide all Ph.D. candidates complementary research skills. Classes are taught by both faculty from the University of Turin and invited guests.
Multi- and interdisciplinary skills, together with transferable skills, add to the researchers’ curricula thus allowing them to also develop other academic and non-academic competences, while increasing and diversifying post-doc career opportunities.
The complementary training concerns different fields, such as:

  • Digital Humanities
  • Communication, dissemination and public engagement
  • Professional conduct and research ethics
  • Fundraising and research management
  • Career planning and advancement
